by JKeMac Tutoring may seem minuscule to some or is usually seen as another expense like any other thing, but it has been proven to have many benefits, and is not only there to help your child academically, but can leave a lasting impact on their mind and life. 1. Tutoring helps learners to retain informationWhile studying, students often try to memorise work instead of taking in concepts to understand how they relate to one another to bring about a fundamental principle. Tutoring can help learners fully understand these concepts and help learners to study using effective methods other than using memorisation as a tool to just “get done with the work”. 2. Boost the learner’s confidenceTutoring promotes confidence and gives your child the opportunity to learn and retain information on their own, this in turn helps them to build confidence within themselves and their abilities. A lack of confidence coupled with a negative mindset can also impact how a learner tackles their schoolwork. Tutoring reinforces and encourages learners to have a positive attitude and mindset towards the subject or problem area. It encourages learners to have an "I’ll try" attitude instead of an "I can’t" mindset. By doing so, the learner will want to try and tackle problems and this can help them be better prepared for challenges that they may face, not only in the subject, but when it comes to any obstacle they may face. 3. Helps to combat procrastinationProcrastination is something we all experience from time to time. Procrastination is the phenomenon of postponing or putting off important things to a later time or date. Getting your child into a fixed learning schedule (besides being in school) can be difficult, which is why tutoring can help learners get into a routine, whereby learners sit with work for a few hours after school which encourages them to study and spend more time with their work. 4. Alleviates pressure from parentsWe all know that being a parent is not the easiest thing in the world. Having to work full-time jobs, make sure the house is clean and tidy, cook and having to take care of the kids can be quite demanding. Children will naturally receive homework, assignments, and tasks in which they will sometimes require assistance and often parents will not always have the time or energy to sit with their child’s schoolwork at night. This is where tutoring comes in. Getting a tutor will ensure your child get the extra attention they need and will ensure your child is assisted with their homework and additional academic needs and challenges which may present over time. 5. Learners develop effective study methodsDid you know that there are different study methods and strategies one can employ when trying to study for your exams? In one of our previous blogs (Study Methds), we highlight some of these strategies and some articles have also been written about proven methods that work better than others. Tutors can help your children learn how to study and how to use these strategies to learn to retain information in the best possible way. It is also important to note that different study methods will work for different students and tutoring provides personalised attention in which the tutor is able to identify the learner’s difficulties and proceed to guide the learner in terms of what would be the best strategy for them.
With that being said, parents, I implore to you to not wait until it’s too late! Getting a tutor for your child is an investment in their education and also helps them get the extra boost they need to excel in school. With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, some children may be confused and might even feel a little lost, it has become even more important now to help your child stay up to date with schoolwork. While most tutors may not be teachers, tutors are there to guide, facilitate and encourage the learner to do even better than what they have previously performed
